4th GRADE LESSONS AND FINAL REVIEW OUTLINE FOR READING AND ELA- WEEK OF MAY 31,2010

REMINDERS:

1. Remember to read the purple assignment book and check the HW folder each night to know your child's homework for each day. Also, check your child’s notebooks to see what they are doing in class or if I have written you a note. Homework will not be accepted late. If the children are absent, they should get their notes and HW assignments from a friend or myself and complete them within 2 days of their return to school. Anything not handed in will be given a grade of zero in the SIS system.

2. Your child needs to remember to bring all of their school supplies every day. Children do not have pens, pencils, or looseleaf for class. Being organized, prepared, and responsible is all part of good conduct.

3. The children were given a new book to read called The Widow’s Broom. This will be their last book of the year. The Book Test will be on Thursday, June 3rd. Your child should take notes on the different characters, settings, and important details.

VOCABULARY: Vocabulary Test- Weds., June 2 on all the words from the 4th Quarter (six weeks). See Vocabulary NB from the weeks 4/12, 4/19, 4/26, 5/3, 5/10, 5/17. There are 90 words to study for the Cumulative Vocabulary Test on 6/2.

READING EXAM: 1. Vocabulary Words: know the meaning of the vocabulary words from the following stories:

If your child was absent for any of the words, you can check the Reading Text Book for the words and the definitions are in the glossary. Review pages in the New York Practice Book that we have done. 2. Spelling: The children should know the Spelling Words for the stories above. The Spelling Words can be found in the notebook and also the Word Study Book. **Spelling words and sentences will be given on the Language Arts Final Exam. Other skills that should be reviewed and are reviewed in the Reading Notebook are: 1. Synonyms- words that mean nearly the same eg. big, large 2. Antonyms- words that are opposites eg. hot, cold 3. Homophones- words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and have different meanings eg. I, eye 4. Multiple Meaning Words- words that are spelled the same, sound the same, but have different meanings eg. trunk- An elephant has a trunk. I put the groceries in the trunk of the car. 5. Syllabication- the number of vowel sounds that you hear in a word eg. rainbow has 2 syllables because the long a sound is heard in the first syllable and the long o sound is heard in the second syllable. 6. Root Words- the base word eg. walked the root word is “walk”. The word without any prefixes or endings. 7. Prefixes- letters that are added to the beginning of a word and change its meaning eg. redo- re is a prefix that means to “do over again” 8. Suffixes- letters that are added to the end of a word and change its meaning eg. wishful- ful is a suffix that means “full of” 9. Compound Words- two complete words that are put together to make a new word eg. rain + bow = rainbow 10. Contractions- two words are combined by using an apostrophe to make a word shorter eg. I will – I’ll, I am- I’m LANGUAGE ARTS EXAM

3RD GRADE LESSON PLANS AND REVIEW OUTLINE FOR READING AND ELA- MAY 31, 2010

REMINDERS:

1. Remember to read the purple assignment book and check the HW folder each night to know your child's homework for each day. Also, look through your child’s Reading and Language Arts NBs to see how they are doing on their classwork and homework. Remember that the children are responsible for all homework and classwork when they are absent. Please check the blog to hand in any missing assignments. Also, make sure they get any missing notes or vocabulary and spelling words.

2. Gym on Mondays. Wear gym shirt, gym pants, and sneakers.

3. The children received the book My Best Friend is Invisible (Goosebumps) to read. This will be the last book of the year. The Book Test will be on Weds. 6/16. Your child should take notes on important details, settings, and the different characters in the story. They should be reading at least two chapters everyday!

4. No school Friday, 6/4.

5. Please sign and return the Field Day Permission Slip and return it.

REMINDERS:

1. Remember to read the purple assignment book and check the HW folder each night to know your child's homework for each day.

2. Your child needs to remember to bring all of their school supplies every day. Many children are coming to class with no pencils or looseleaf.

3. Remember that Homework counts as a grade and many children are not completing it. Check your child’s Reading and Language Arts NB every day to see if I have written you a note. If your child is absent from school, he/she is still responsible to complete the HW and get any notes that may have been given. See blog for HW and tests for the week.

4. The second grade is reading Ira Sleeps Over. Make sure your child reads every day. Notes were started in the back of the Reading NB. The children should complete the notes by writing the settings, characters, and a summary of important details. The Book Test will be Thurs. 6/3.

5. The outline for studying for Final Exams can be found below. There will be no written homework given this week in order to study for Final Exams.
