WEEK OF NOV. 9, 2009 4TH GRADE READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

REMINDERS:

1. Please remember to cover all soft-covered books. Some children have not covered any and there are no extra copies if they rip.

2. Remember to read the purple assignment book and check the HW folder each night to know your child's homework for each day. Also, check your child’s notebooks to see what they are doing in class or if I have written you a note.

3. Your child needs to remember to bring all of their school supplies every day.

4. The children received a new book, Goosebumps, on Friday. The notes will be started in the Reading NB. The children should complete the notes on their own. There will be a Book Test on Friday, Nov. 20, 2009.

TESTS:

1. Vocabulary Test on new words Friday, 11/13.

2. Book Test on Goosebumps Friday, 11/20

3. Spelling Test on the words from Letters from Yosemite Friday, 11/13

PROJECT: Language Arts

Write a report on Thanks giving. The outline for the report will be in the Language Arts NB. The report should be three paragraphs long and follow the outline. It may be typed or written. It can also include pictures. Use your creativity. This is due Monday, Nov. 23rd.

VOCABULARY:

Study the words for the week. Test on Friday. Check Vocabulary NB.

1. errands- short trips to do something

2. steady- firmly fixed; not swaying

3. wobbled- moved from side to side in an unsteady or shaky way.

4. hatch- to come from an egg

5. error- something that is done wrong; a mistake

Reading Vocabulary Words from Letters from Yosemite:

earthquake, eruptions, volcano, glacier, impressive, naturalist, preserve, slopes, species, wilderness, altitudes, formations, reservoir. Check the Reading NB for these words.

SPELLING: Words with Long U sounds

LANGUAGE ARTS: We will be working on the following- Voyages Textbook pgs. 314-327

Sentences:

Declarative- (statement) I went to the store.

Interrogative- (question) Can you read quickly?

Imperative- (commands or requests) Put the book down.

Exclamatory- (exclamations) It is freezing in here!

Subjects and Predicates – complete and simple subjects and complete

and simple predicate; compound subjects and compound predicates.

The little girl went to the park.

Complete Subject- The little girl

Simple Subject- girl

Complete Predicate- went to the park

Simple Predicate- went

Compound Subjects and Predicates- a compound subject has two or more simple subjects connected by and or or. A compound predicate has two or more simple predicates connected with and or or.

Eg. My mom and I went to the store. Compound Subject

The children were drawing and painting. Compound Predicate

HOMEWORK:

Check the Purple Assignment Book every night for exact pages.

MONDAY: Spelling- write each spelling word 5x each in the Reading NB

TUESDAY: Spelling- write a sentence for spelling words 1-13 on LL. Please underline the spelling word in each sentence.

WEDNESDAY: No school.

THURSDAY: Spelling- write a sentence for words 14-25 in the Reading NB. Study for Spelling and Vocabulary Tests.

FRIDAY: Read for at least 30 minutes over the weekend. You can read any book or the book that was given to you. JUST READ! Remember to read and make notes for Goosebumps and also work on your Thanksgiving Project.
