Reminders:

1. Please check Mr. Woods’ blog for information about new school hours, Catholic School Week, Report Card distribution, Parent/Teacher Conferences and other announcements.

2. Fifth grade need to wear gym uniforms every Wednesday.

3. All students need to be in full school uniforms on Tuesday, 1/31 (no gym uniforms). Pictures will be taken for the school website, and anyone not in uniform will not be allowed to be in any of the pictures.

Start reading your book as soon as you get it! I will list pages as soon as all the books are given out this week.

Description: Students consider the challenges of fictional and real refugees. They read the novel Inside Out & Back Again, analyzing critical incidents that reveal the dynamic nature of Ha, a 10-year-old Vietnamese girl whose family flees during the fall of Saigon. Module Focus: Working with Evidence

Description: In this second module, students continued to develop their ability to closely read text while studying the theme of taking a stand. During the first half of Module 2, students read two speeches reflecting examples of real people taking a stand. By reading these speeches they built background knowledge about the module’s overarching theme, engaged in a study of the speaker’s perspective, and analyzed the craft of forming an argument. In the second half of Module 2, students read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and continued to study the theme of taking a stand as it is revealed in the novel. Students engaged in a character study of Atticus by analyzing his actions and words, and what others say about him, to better understand him as a character.

Description: In this module, students explored the issue of working conditions, both historical and modern day. As they read and discussed both literary and informational text, students analyzed how people, settings, and events interacted in a text and how an author developed a central claim. Students strengthened their ability to discuss specific passages from a text with a partner, and write extended text-based arguments and informational pieces.
