Week of December 14, 2015

Reminders:

These are a few reminders concerning homework and classwork:

A. All work must be completed in blue or black ink (other colors will not be accepted).  

B. If the assignment states that looseleaf is to be used, no other types of paper will be accepted (paper ripped out of notebooks or legal pads is unacceptable).
   
C. Homework must be handed in on the day due, unless I receive a note from a parent explaining why you did not complete your HW. This will only be accepted if there is an emergency at home (not because you were too tired or that you had too much other HW). 

D. Homework and classwork must be neat. Work that is sloppy or illegible will not be accepted.

E. Please cover all textbooks and workbooks. A clear plastic cover is suggested.

F. Gym uniforms must be worn by 5th graders on Wednesdays for gym.

G. Students in the 5th grade will have extended day classes each Tuesday from 3:00-5:00 for Math. 

H. There will be a 12:00 dismissal today (Monday), December 14 due to a Faculty Meeting.

I. Tomorrow Tuesday, 12/15 the 5th, 6th, and 7th grades will be going to the Cloisters Museum. The children must wear their gym shirts. They can also bring money to buy lunch at McDonalds or they can bring their own lunch.

J. Fifth Grade: Friday, December 18- Lesson and Carols at 8:30 in the church. Every class will sing a song. The children should wear dress clothes and that are green or red. We will also be having a Christmas Party. The children can bring in something to share with the class and something to drink for themselves. Parents, please let me know what you will be able to send in. The children won a contest, so they will be getting pizza as a prize.
Please remember to bring in your Secret Santa gift if you chose someone.

K. Please send in an extra-large plastic or strong shopping bag by Wednesday, 12/16. The children will pack up all of the books in the shopping bag that they will be leaving in school during Christmas Vacation. Please let them know what books that you would like for them to bring home, and they will bring those books home on Thursday.

Homework for Grade 5:

The 5th Grade students are reading Investigating the Scientific Method with Max Axiom, Super Scientist and The Boy Who Invented TV: The Story of Philo Farnsworth for Module 2.

Reading Vocabulary for the week will be listed and defined in the Reading Vocabulary notebook. All vocabulary words should be written on index cards by the end of the week. The vocabulary word should be written on the front of the card with Module 2 written in the lower right corner. The definition from the notebook should be written neatly on the back of the card. For Christmas Vacation:
1. Please start studying all of the vocabulary from Modules 1 and 2 for Midterm Exams. Also, make sure that you have read both books. All vocabulary words from Module 1 and 2 should be written on index cards and stored in 2 Ziploc bags.


2. Project for Module 2:
Research an inventor. Create a power point presentation of about 8 slides that tells about the inventor’s life and the inventions that he created. Also, tell/show how these inventions make our lives easier today. It can be saved on a USB drive or saved on google.
Slide 1- Title page (name and picture of the inventor)
Slides 2-7 Information about Inventor. There should be no more than two lines of writing on each slide. You will be able to use index cards to write your extra information on.
Slide 8- Bibliography (all the books and articles that you used in your presentation). Due Wednesday, January 6.

***If you do not know how to do a power point, you can do a two page paper on the same topic. The paper must include pictures, be double-spaced, and typed in 12 font-New Times Roman. You also need a Cover Page with the Inventors Name, his/her picture, your name, date, and grade typed on the bottom right corner. You should also have a bibliography page at the end of the paper.
So it should be 4 pages in all.  Due Wednesday, January 6.

For Christmas Vacation:
1. Start studying the notes for Modules 1 and 2. The Midterm Exam is the 3rd week in January and there will be too much information to review if you leave it all for the end. Make sure that you take home your 2 SS notebooks and if you like, your textbook. You might need it for your project.


Project for Module 2:
2. Create a power point of a minimum of 10 slides on the colony you were given to research. Your presentation should include the following:
a. Title Page- Name of Colony and your name, grade, and date
b. Map of the 13 colonies- showing the location of your colony
c. Reasons why the colony was established
d. Economic and Geographic conditions
e. Religion
f. System of Government
g. People associated with the colony (any important names)
h. Life in the colony
i. Contribution of the colony
j. Bibliography

There should be no more than 2 sentences of text on a slide. You may use index cards for your information. Do not plagiarize information! Do not give any information from present day. This project is about when the colony was established. Due Wednesday, January 6.

I. Please remember to send in canned food for the people at the Nursing Home. Tuesday (tomorrow) is the last day.

J. There will be a Thanksgiving Assembly on Tuesday, 11/24 at 9:00 AM.Students may wear dress clothes (black pants and white shirts, and whatever else that Ms. Alma told you at rehearsal). All students are asked to bring in a dish of food to share after the concert, as a way of celebrating Thanksgiving Day together. All types of foods are welcome! All parents are invited to attend.

K. There will be 9:00 AM on Wednesday, 11/25 for Thanksgiving and an Honors Assembly will follow Mass. If your child’s Report Card stated that he/she would be receiving honors, the certificates will be given out after Mass.

L. 5th Grade students may bring snacks and something to drink on Wednesday for a small Thanksgiving Party in the afternoon. They can also wear dress clothes and should bring their lunch.

K. There will be no After School Program on Wednesday! Dismissal for all students will be at 3:00 PM.

Reading Vocabulary for the week will be listed and defined in the Reading Vocabulary notebook. All vocabulary words should be written on index cards by the end of the week. The vocabulary word should be written on the front of the card with Module 2 written in the lower right corner. The definition from the notebook should be written neatly on the back of the card. Remember these cards count as a grade!
