WEEK OF JAN. 25, 2010 3RD GRADE READING AND ELA LESSON PLANS

REMINDERS:

1. Please remember to cover all soft-covered books. Some children have still not covered any of their books.

2. Remember to read the purple assignment book and check the HW folder each night to know your child's homework for each day. Also, look through your child’s Reading and Language Arts NBs to see how they are doing on their classwork and homework . HW assignments must be handed in on time. Nothing will be accepted late . If your child is absent, he/she will have one day after he/she returns to school to complete their HW.

3. Gym on Mondays. Wear gym shirt, gym pants, and sneakers.

4. The children have received a new book to read.The boys will be reading Fantastic Mr. Fox and the girls Charlotte's Web. Then they will switch. Please make sure they read a little every day. They should also be taking notes. The notes will be started in back of the Reading NB and the children should add to them.

5. Dismissal on Friday, 1/29 will be at 2:30.

6. The 3rd Quarter begins today. Please read the school blog for announcements.

7. The children have a How –to Project due next Monday, 2/1. They will have to write this on looseleaf to be handed in. They will have to explain to the class either how to make something or give instructions on completing a task. See the Voyages Book Chapter 2 for ideas. The children have the instructions for writing it up in their Lang. Arts NB.

TESTS:

1. Spelling Test- Friday, 1/29

2. Book Test (The Story of Jumping Mouse and Alice in Wonderland) Thursday, 1/28

3. Weekly Vocabulary Test- Friday, 1/29 (see Vocabulary NB for definitions).

VOCABULARY: definitions can be found in the Vocabulary NB

  1. abandon- to give up, desert, or surrender
  2. donate- to give a gift to or contribute to a charitable cause (eg. donate to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti).
  3. refuge- shelter from danger; protection
  4. volunteer- someone who offers himself to do a service of his own free will.
  5. rescue- to save from evil, danger, or confinement

2. Reading Vocabulary Words from Little Grunt and the Big Egg:

brunch, peaceful, omelet, erupting, lava, escape

Check the Reading NB for these words and their definitions.

SPELLING: Words with the /oi/ sound (Little Grunt and the Big Egg)

joyful, choice, voice, joint, moist, spoil, royal, annoy, noise, employ, soil, loyal, boiled, destroy, pointy

Challenge Words:

earthquake, volcano, hurricane, weather, rumble

LANGUAGE ARTS: Second Semester Work

Noun: is a word that names a person (girl), place (school), or a thing (ball).

Common noun: names any person, place, or thing.

Proper noun: names a particular person, place, or thing. Each proper noun begins with a capital letter.

eg. teacher is a common noun; Ms. Larios is a proper noun.

Singular noun: names one person, place, or thing.

Plural noun: names more than one person, place, or thing.

Add –s or –es to make most nouns plural. For nouns that end in a consonant and y, change y to i and add –es. Add –es to nouns that end in s, ss, x, ch, or sh.

eg. boy-boys, girl-girls, box-boxes, glass-glasses, lunch-lunches, dish-dishes, bus-buses, party-parties, candy-candies, holiday-holidays

Irregular Plural Nouns: The plurals of some nouns look a little different from their singular forms. These are called irregular plurals because they are not formed by adding an –s or –es. They should be memorized.

ox-oxen, child-children, tooth-teeth, foot-feet, mouse-mice, woman-women, goose-geese, sheep-sheep, deer-deer, fish-fish, Chinese- Chinese

Singular Possessive Nouns- the possessive form of a noun shows possession, or ownership. To form a singular possessive, which means something is owned by one person or thing, add an apostrophe and the letter (s) to a singular noun. (friend- friend’s)

eg. I walked to my neighbor’s house.

Do you like Isabella’s coat?

Neighbor’s house means the house belongs to a neighbor. Isabella’s coat means that the coat belongs to Isabella.

HOMEWORK: Check the Purple Assignment Book every night for exact pages.

MONDAY: Spelling- write each spelling word 5x each in Reading NB

TUESDAY: Write a sentence for words 1-10 in the Reading NB

WEDNESDAY: 1. Write a sentence for words 11-20 on looseleaf to be handed in. 2. Study for the Book Test. Remember to bring the book and notes.

THURSDAY: Language Arts- Voyages pg. 56 Activity E. Complete on looseleaf and write the whole sentence out. Underline the correct answer in each sentence.

FRIDAY: Read for at least 30 minutes over the weekend. You can read any book or the book that was given to you. Remember to do your How-to Project. It is due on Weds.,2/3. See your Lang. Arts NB or Voyages Book Chapter 2 if you need help.
