Week of May 30, 2011

Reminders:

As stated on last week's blog, these are a few reminders concerning homework and classwork. Your child will lose points if they do not follow the directions stated below.

A. New Lunch Schedule- 12:00-12:45

B. Remember to bring Rosary Beads to school for the May Procession on tomorrow. All students should be in full uniform.

C. Material to review for the final exams will be listed under the HW for this week. Please read it carefully. Your child has already been given the material needed to study for each exam. Exams will begin next week. A schedule will be listed on the June calendar and next week’s blog.

D. Progress Reports will be sent home tomorrow. Please make sure that you ask your child for it.

If you received below 70% on last week’s HW questions (which were graded as an open book quiz), you must redo the assignment. You were told that these questions would be used to review for the Final Exam. They will be returned to you on Tuesday, and must be signed by a parent by Weds. 6/1. The questions must be handed in by Friday, 6/3. Restate the question in the answer. You can find the answers in your notebook or text. These questions will help you to review for your final exam. If you received a 70% or above, good job, use this week to review.Your papers will be returned on Friday, 6/3 to sign and make any corrections that you like. Due Friday, 6/3

Questions:

1. Where did the French and Indian War begin? Why were the effects of The French and Indian War important?

2. What was The Proclamation Act of 1763? Why did The Proclamation Act of 1763 anger the colonists?

3. What was the Stamp Act? Why was it different from earlier colonial taxes? Who spoke out against the Stamp Act? Why?

4. Why were the Intolerable Acts passed? List 3 of the Intolerable Acts.

5. Who wrote Common Sense? What was the purpose of Common Sense? Who were the Loyalists? Who were the Patriots?

6. What were the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation? Under the Articles of Confederation, what powers did Congress have?

The material that will be asked on the Final Exam has been starred in your child’s Social Studies NB. The textbook can be used as a backup or to read as a review. The questions above are very important to review for the final, because similar material will be asked on the exam.

5. Describe the working conditions of factory workers in the late 1800s and the early 1900s. Who was the head of the American Federation of Labor and what did this union look for?

6. A strike is a stopping of work by workers to force an employer to meet their demands. Explain 2 of these strikes: The Railroad Strike of 1877, The Haymarket Strike of 1886, The Pullman Strike of 1894. Why do you think Americans did not immediately support the labor unions?
