Reminders:

1. January calendars will be distributed on Tuesday.

2. Fifth grade needs to wear Gym uniforms every Wednesday.

3. Study notes for Midterm Exams will be on next week’s blog.

HOMEWORK: Week of January 2, 2017- Module 2

                     GRADE 5
Lesson Plans

The 5th Grade is reading the following books for Module 2:
a. Investigating the Scientific Method with Max Axiom, Super Scientist
b. The Boy Who invented TV: The Story of Philo Farnsworth

Both above books should be finished. The children should also review Esperanza’s Rising and the UDHR (this document should be in the folder) from Module 1 for the Midterm Exam in Reading

Achieve 3000 is assigned each week to help improve the children’s vocabulary and comprehension skills. The children should complete any assignments (activities or thought questions) that are not completed during class. They can also get extra review by completing the stretch activities for the story that they have worked on in class. The Activity and Thought Question must be completed every week because they are counted as a grade!

Please start studying all vocabulary for Modules 1 and 2- Midterms are coming up in two weeks.

Write all new vocabulary on index cards. Words will not be accepted if they are not in a bag! Please keep Module 1 index cards in a safe place so you will have them for the Midterm Exam. You can keep them at home until we start to review.


Famous Inventor Projects due on Tuesday, January 24.

Outline for Project:
Slide 1: Introduction- Person's name and picture, your name, date, and grade

Slide 2: Infancy (where and when he/she was born), childhood, and teenage years, parents, siblings, and schooling (can be more than 1 slide)

Slide 3: Life as an adult (can be more than 1 slide)

Slide 4: What are some of the inventions that the person is famous for (can be more than 1 slide)

Slide 5: Anything else that you would like to add. If you add pictures, be able to explain them.

Slide 6: Bibliography- there must be two sources of information

There should be no more than two sentences of text on a slide plus a picture. Your information should be on index cards or looseleaf. Study your presentation, so you are not reading from the cards or paper- the cards/paper should be used as notes, so you don't forget anything. Please follow this outline carefully.

The 6th Grade is reading the following book for Module 2:
Bud Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. This book should now be finished.
The children should start reviewing the Lightning Thief from Module 1 for the Midterm Exam in Reading.

Start reviewing your Social Studies notes and vocabulary for Modules 1 and 2. Midterms are coming up two weeks.

The following 4 questions are review questions for the Midterm Exam. They are each worth 25 points. This assignment is due Thursday, January 5. I will correct them and hand them back for you to review your mistakes.

Module 1:

1. While Native Americans were different socially and culturally, they shared common beliefs. Explain the following points:

a. How did Native Americans view land ownership?
b. What part did religion play in the lives of Native Americans?
c. What was the reason that Native Americans did not form large empires like the Aztecs and Incas did?

2. The Beginning of life in the Americas- Explain the following:
a. How did changes in climate lead to migration to the Americas?
b. How did early peoples in the Americas get their food?
c. What led to the development of different culture groups in the Americas?

Module 2:

3. English Colonies in the Americas
a. Explain the reasons that the Pilgrims and the Puritans left England to settle in the Americas.
b. Compare how the Pilgrim and Puritan colonies were similar and different.

4. Explain the cause of the French and Indian War. In your response, include where and when the war took place, who was involved, at least two events in the war, what was the outcome of the war, and how did the war change the balance of power in North America.
