Week of January 20, 2014


Reminders:
1. These are a few reminders concerning homework and classwork:
              
A. All work must be completed in blue or black ink (other colors will not be accepted).  

B. If the assignment states that looseleaf is to be used, no other types of paper will be accepted (paper ripped out of notebooks or legal pads is unacceptable.
   
C. Homework must be handed in on the day due, unless I receive a not from a parent explaining why you did not complete your HW. This will only be accepted if there is an emergency at home (not because you were too tired or that you had too much other HW). 

D. Homework and classwork must be neat. Work that is sloppy or illegible will not be accepted
       
Remember that homework and classwork count as a grade!

HOMEWORK: For the Week of January 20, 2014- Unit 3 Week 6

5th Grade Reading- The book for Unit 3 is Who was Dr. Seuss by Janet Paschal. The book should be finished by Friday. 

****Unit 4- New book is Bud Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. Please purchase this book this week. If you need me to order for you, please bring the money by Thursday. The cost is $ 8.25.


Homework:

Tuesday- Define the words below in your Reading Vocabulary Notebook. You can find the definitions in the back of the Progress Book. Due Thursday, 1/23.

 Wednesday- Common Core Progress Book- read “Hurricane Taylor” pgs. 18-23.
On looseleaf, answer questions 1 and 2 on page 21, answer questions 1-2-3 on page 23. Please write out the questions and answers. Due Friday 1/24.

Unit 3 Project is due January 27, 2014.  Research a poet, author, or artist of your choice. Write a report about that person that includes the following details:
1. Date of birth and what was his/her childhood like.
2. Date of death
3. Where did he/she live?
4. What did he or she do to make him/her famous?
5. What are some additional facts that are interesting?
Your project should be 2 pages typed, doubled-spaced, New Times Roman 12 Font. There should be a Title Page and a Reference Page. That makes 4 pages in total. You may include pictures and if you a presenting your project for extra credit, you may show your pictures using a PowerPoint. If you have any questions, please see me before the project is due. There will be no extensions. The project needs to be printed out and handed in on the date due.

6th Grade Reading- The book for Unit 3 is Escape from Saigon: How a Vietnam War Orphan Became an American Boy by Andrea Warren . Finish reading the book by Friday.

 

*****Unit 4- New book is The Freed0m Train: The Story of Harriet Tubman by Dorothy Sterling. The children do not need to buy this book, since we have copies in the library.  They will have to make notes in their notebook, because they will not be able to write or underline in the book. If you would like to order your own copy, please bring the money by Thursday. The cost is $ 6.00. You can also purchase the book yourself.

1. What country is the person originally from?
2. Date of birth and the age they came to the US to live.
3. Discuss the reasons why they came to the US.
4. Give details of their life in the country of their birth and compare it to their life in the US.
5. What are some additional facts (research) that are interesting?
