Week of June 20,2011

Reminders for the last week of school:

A. The children will be packing up this week. They will be bringing home folders, notebooks, and some workbooks.

B. Weds. will be the last day of the After School Program.

C. The 5th grade will be having an End of the Year Party on Wednesday. Each child is asked to bring $3.00 to order pizza. They should also bring something to drink for themselves, and whatever else they would like to bring to share with the class. They may wear whatever they like, but no shorts are permitted.

D. Thursday all students need to be in full uniform for the 8th grade Graduation Mass and Ceremony.

E. Friday is the last day of school. Each student needs to be in full uniform for the Award’s Ceremony, which will take place at 10:00 AM in the lunchroom. All parents are invited. Dismissal will follow the ceremony, at approximately 11:00.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support during this school year. It is so important to be a part of your child’s education.

Have a safe and enjoyable summer, and I look forward to seeing you in September!

2. What was The Proclamation Act of 1763? Why did The Proclamation Act of 1763 anger the colonists?

3. What was the Stamp Act? Why was it different from earlier colonial taxes? Who spoke out against the Stamp Act? Why?

4. Why were the Intolerable Acts passed? List 3 of the Intolerable Acts.

5. Who wrote Common Sense? What was the purpose of Common Sense? Who were the Loyalists? Who were the Patriots?

6. What were the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation? Under the Articles of Confederation, what powers did Congress have?

2. The Buffalo provided the Indians with most of the essentials of life. Explain this statement. Give at least four reasons why the Native American traditional way of life changed.

3. How did railroads stimulate the economy? How did John D. Rockefeller create a monopoly with the Standard Oil Company? Explain.

4. Name 2 inventions and their inventors of the 1900s that ushered in a new era of transportation. Name 3 inventions and their inventors that helped people communicate more quickly.

5. Describe the working conditions of factory workers in the late 1800s and the early 1900s. Who was the head of the American Federation of Labor and what did this union look for?

6. A strike is a stopping of work by workers to force an employer to meet their demands. Explain 2 of these strikes: The Railroad Strike of 1877, The Haymarket Strike of 1886, and The Pullman Strike of 1894. Why do you think Americans did not immediately support the labor unions?
