HOMEWORK: For the Week of September 26,2022

ELA/Reading Homework for Grade 2

Ready Gen (savasrealize.com)-We are working on Unit 1 Module A. We will be reviewing beginning, middle, and ending sounds this week. The children should study a few vocabulary words per night (around 5) from their ELA notebook. We will also be reviewing the words in class

Please make sure that your child reads for 20 minutes each night. This is important and a big part of their reading homework. You can choose any book you want, and children can read alone or with their parents. Both ways are equally helpful. Try and ask your child questions about the story and discuss details with them. It is important for them to bring a book to school every day to read in school for silent reading. It can be the same book that he/she is reading at home or a different book. We are trying to build fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.

The Edgenuity Program is still not fixed. I will post it on Google Classroom as soon as it is working.

All homework will be assigned on Google Classroom. Directions will be given, and due dates will be provided. Please make sure that your child completes all assignments. If nothing is assigned in Google Classroom, then your child should read for 20 minutes and complete 20 minutes of Edgenuity for ELA (when it becomes available).

All assignments must be submitted by the due date, or points will be deducted from the grade.

Please cover all soft-covered workbooks so they do not rip. Plastic covers are suggested, but not required. It may be a good idea to add cardboard to the cover of the book to make it stronger.

Please make sure that your child accepts my invitation to Google Classroom. Many have not as of Sunday. Parents are also invited to join, but your child must accept my invitation first.

Also make sure that your child has all necessary supplies each day, including sharpened pencils, looseleaf, notebooks, folders, highlighters, colored pencils, etc.

Science Homework for Grade 2

The children received a Science Book on Friday. It is soft-covered, so if you can put a cover on it, that would be great. I will be posting Science vocabulary words this week on Google Classroom. The children should copy it into their science notebooks just like they did for the ELA vocabulary.

Reminders for Grade 4 Homeroom:

Tuesday, September 6th: Opening School Meeting at 2:00 PM. (You will be given a brown bag containing a Science Kit that your child may work on at home and a folder with your child’s name on it containing the Yearly Calendar and Student Handbook on one side which you can keep at home for your information. On the other side of the folder, there are forms that need to be filled out, signed, and returned to the Homeroom teacher (Ms. Toscano) by Friday, 9/16- please send all forms back in the folder that you receive them in. Please make sure that you sign both emergency cards front and back and check to make sure that your child signs his/her name if the form has a space for it. Also, there are two forms written in English and Spanish (they are stapled together). Just fill out one of them.

Wednesday, September 7th- First Day of Classes 8:00-3:15 (enter through the lunchroom). All students should have their school supplies, bookbag, and must be in full uniform. If your child would like to bring their own lunch box with lunch or a snack each day, that is fine (no glass bottles). Please label all personal items in case anything gets lost. Please read the blog concerning school supplies. Please send supplies in a separate bag for each teacher with the teacher’s name and your child’s name written on it somewhere. This will prevent much of the usual confusion that results when supplies are handed in randomly.

Thursday and Friday, September 8th and 9th - Regular school days, 8:00-3:15.

General Information/School Rules and Regulations:

1. Grade 4- Please sign all papers that will be distributed in a colored folder on Tuesday at the meeting or on Wednesday, if you are unable to attend the meeting. The folder will be labeled with your child’s name. You will receive two emergency cards to fill out. Fill out all parts including the mother and father’s names even if you are not living together. Include the following information: phone numbers- including cell #’s, whom to contact in case of an emergency, and remember to fill out the back of each card and sign the bottom. You must list the name of someone that we can contact if there is an emergency or your child gets sick and needs to be picked up. There are also other forms that need your signature. Please complete all forms and return them no later than Friday, Sept.16 in the folder you received them in. Please keep the calendar and Student Handbook.

2. Grades 2,3,4,5- All school supplies should be in by Thursday, 9/8. Each teacher has a supply list posted on his/her blog. (If your child does not have the necessary materials, he/she cannot be expected to do the necessary work).

3. Grades 2,3,4,5- Please cover all soft-covered books, and maybe add some cardboard, so the books do not rip. If they are broken and you can fix them, please feel free to do so. Please make sure your child’s name is in each book. It is important to cover the books because soft-covered books break very easily, and pages will start to fall out.

4. Grades 2,3,4,5- Check your child’s notebooks, folder, and bookbag every day to see what is going on in class, or if there are any notes from teachers concerning homework or classwork. Please make sure that your child completes his/her homework each day and has all the necessary supplies each day.

5. Grades 2,3,4,5- Please send a note when your child is absent or when you need to pick him/her up early from school. If the school does not receive an absence note, your child will be marked illegally absent. If your child is sick for a few days try to have someone come to school to pick up the books needed to complete the work your child has missed. All students are responsible for turning in any assignments missed when they are absent from school. They will be given one or two days to complete the assignments once they return to school. They can find all missing assignments on each teacher’s blog or on Google Classroom. You can also email each teacher.

6. Grades 2,3,4,5- Please read the monthly calendar, Mr. Woods’ (school) blog and teachers’ blogs, Google Classroom, and the Parent Handbook carefully. Also check your child’s grades on Cornerstone (EDUCATE), so that you know right away if your child is having any problems in school. Passwords will be available in the school office from Mr. Guzman starting next week. You can also email Mr. Woods at olqm1@aol.com for a password.

7. Grades 2,3,4,5- All students should be in full uniform each day unless otherwise specified on the blog or IRIS alert. That means shoes, socks, school sweaters, vests, etc. This is all stated in the Parent's Handbook. Good conduct, effort, keeping belongings neat and organized, completing homework and classwork assignments, arriving to school on time, and being respectful to classmates and school staff are other criteria that are evaluated when determining your child’s character development grade (Conduct).

8. Grades 2,3,4,5- My blog will list reminders/information/notable events for my homeroom first (4th grade) and then list homework, tests, and projects for Grades 2-5 ELA/Reading and Science (Grades 2 and 3).

9. Grades 2,3,4,5-   I am asking that each parent send me an email address so I can invite you to my Google Classroom. I will then be able to send messages and you can send me a message if you wish. I cannot send you an invitation to Google Classroom without a working email address. You can email it to me at mstoscano@olqmnyc.org  or you can send me a note. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I will get back to you as soon as I can.
