Wednesday, January 7, 2009 Aim: to review compound subjects, compound predicates, and compound sentences. Objective: The children will be working in their Grammar and Writing Book in order to review the above concepts. REMINDERS: 1. Please make sure that your child received a new purple HW Assignment Book, a January calendar, and a letter explaining the IRIS a rapid response communication system. 2. I am asking that each child bring another box of Kleenex. All of the tissues collected at the beginning of the school year have been used and we need more. It is important that everyone brings a box so that we have enough for the rest of the school year. 3. There will be an 11:30 dismissal on Friday. 4. The children will be able to distinguish between the naming part(subject) and the telling part (predicate) of the sentence. 4TH GRADE MIDTERM REVIEW

READING MIDTERM EXAM 1. Vocabulary Words: know the meaning of the vocabulary words from the following stories: A. Because of Winn Dixie B. Lewis, Clark and Me C. Grandfather's Journey D. The Horned Toad Prince E. Letters Home from Yosemite The definition of the words can be found in your child's Reading Notebook listed under the name of the story. It would be a good idea to review The NY State Practice Book pgs. 1-50. This book lists all 5 stories and defines the vocabulary words. It also gives practice with the different reading skills. LANGUAGE ARTS MIDTERM EXAM- the following pages can be found in the Grammar and Writing Practice Book 1. Types of Sentences: pgs. 1-8 A. Declarative Sentence (statement) B. Interrogative Sentence (question) C. Imperative Sentence (command or request) D. Exclamatory Sentence (exclamation) E. Interjections (not a complete sentence) 2. Subjects and Predicates: pgs. 9-12 A. Compound Subject and Compound Predicate 3. Compound Sentences: pgs. 13-16 A. Simple Sentences 4. Clauses and Complex Sentences: pgs. 17-20 A. Dependent Clause B. Independent Clause 5. Spelling: the words can be found in the Word Study and Spelling Book pgs. 1-20. The words are listed under the names of the 5 Reading Stories from above (A-E). REMINDERS: 1. Book Test is changed to Friday, 1/16 due to Midterm Exams. 2. 4th grade ELA State Exam- the children will be taking the NYS exam in Reading and Language Arts next Tues. 1/13, Weds. 1/14, and Thurs. 1/15. Please download previous tests from the website that was given in December (check blog- http://www.nysedregents.org/testing/elaei/08exams/home.htm). It is a very good way to practice for the test and will give you a chance to see the different parts of the test. 3. Some students did not hand in their assignment on "Why Christmas is Special to Me". This assignment counts as a writing, homework, and speech grade. It is very important for your child to hand in all assignments because they each count as one or more grades.

A good review for the Reading Exam would be to review pages 1-42 in the Reading Practice Book. 2. High Frequency Words: Your child should know how to read the following words. He/she does not need to know how to spell or define them. Theme 1: big, brown, eat, no, people/ get, line, more, stop, together/ about, boy, fall, few, same/ alone, home, right, think/ ball, children, eat, girl, name/ Theme 2: black, grow, last, man, mouse/ after, early, hat, pretty, someone/ before, blue, ever, jump, room/ bit, cake, open, smell, thank/ between, enough, fill, idea, number/ LANGUAGE ARTS MIDTERM EXAM Study the following pages in the Language Arts Handbook 1. Types of Sentences: pgs.79-87 A. Statements B. Questions C. Commands D. Exclamations 2. Naming and Telling Parts of Sentences: pgs. 88-93 3. Nouns: pgs.94-96 4. Spelling: Study pgs. 10-26 in Spelling Book Lesson 1- p.10 Lesson 2- p. 13 Lesson 3- p. 16 Lesson 4- p. 19 Lesson 5- p. 22 REMINDERS: Some of the children did not hand in their Christmas paragraph entitled "Why Christmas is Special to Me". This counts as a homework grade, writing grade, and speech grade. That is why handing in all homework assignments is extremely important. A story map was handed out over the vacation and was due to be handed in today. The children could read a book of their choice and fill out the story map. Remember to write the summary of the story on the back of the story map paper or attach a sheet of looseleaf.
