Week of January 23, 2012

Reminders:
A. All work must be completed in blue or black ink (other colors will not be accepted) and pencil is not allowed.

B. If the assignment states that looseleaf is to be used, no other types of paper will be accepted (paper ripped out of notebooks or legal pads is unacceptable).

C. Starting this week, the students will be given 20 vocabulary words per week. They will have to copy the words and definitions on Monday for Homework and it will be checked on Tuesday by the Homeroom Teacher. If your child does not have internet access at home, he/she will be able to stay in the Afterschool Program on Mondays from 3:00-3:30 in order to copy the words into the Vocabulary NBs.

D. 5th grade will have Gym on Friday, instead of Monday until further notice.

Remember that homework and classwork count as a grade!

Word Wall Test Friday, 1/27. Review the twenty words given this week that are written in the vocabulary notebook.
Remember to copy the words and definitions off of the blog on Monday.This assignment will be checked Tuesday during Homeroom.

Words for this week are:

2. Chambers - A room
3. Investigate - To look into with great care

8. Tombs - A grave; a place for a dead body.
9. Pyramids - A huge pointed building made of stone.
10. Expedition - A journey with a special purpose.
11. Driftwood - Wood that has washed ashore.
12. Galleon - A large sailing ship used in the 1400s and 1500s.
13. Handhold - Something to take hold of with the hands.
14. Mainmast - The pole on a ship that holds the largest sail.
15. Blacksmith - A person who makes things out of iron, using a furnace and hammer.
16. Descent - Downward movement
17. Crevice - Crack; narrow split.
18 Debris - Rubbish; scattered bits and pieces.
19. Barnacles - A small, shelled sea animal that clings to rocks and ships’ bottoms.
20. Spiny - Having pointed spines or thorns.

Stuart Little- Book Tests for Chapters 1-15 will be given this week.
A new book will be distributed to read.

Aim Higher Level F- Read the story on pgs. 54, 55. Answer the questions on pg. 56. Exercise A (1- 5), question and answer. Exercise B- 1, 2, 3. Answer in complete sentences; Read pgs. 58, 59. Do Exercise A (1-10) ans. only; pg. 62 (1-3),answer in complete sentences. Due Thursday, 1/26 on looseleaf.

Aim Higher, Level H- Read pages 46-51. Answer the questions on pg. 52 (1-5, ans. only- letter and word); read pgs. 58 &59. Answer the questions on pg.60 (1-5, ans. only- letter and word), and p.61 Use each of the 6 words in Exercise B in a sentence (disregard the directions given in the book. Due Thursday, 1/26 on looseleaf. ________________________________________________________________

Continue to work on the NHD projects. This project is extensive and covers a lot of research using both primary and secondary sources. The topics have already been chosen, so the next step is to do the research, and design your presentation method. All projects will be due on Thurs, February 2nd. No extensions will be given! If you need to print material, figure out how and where to do it prior to that date. Do not wait until the last minute. This project will count for a large part of the third quarter grade, so put effort into your work. If you are working with a partner, set ups times and places where you can do your work. If there are any problems, please speak to me. Do not wait until the due date!
