Week of November 21, 2016

Reminders:

These are a few reminders concerning homework and classwork: 
       
A. All work must be completed in blue or black ink (other colors will not be accepted).  

B. If the assignment states that looseleaf is to be used, no other types of paper will be accepted (paper ripped out of notebooks or legal pads are unacceptable).
   
C. Homework must be handed in on the day due unless I receive a note from a parent explaining why you did not complete your HW. This will only be accepted if there is an emergency at home (not because you were too tired or that you had too much other HW). 

D. Homework and classwork must be neat. Work that is sloppy or illegible will not be accepted.

E. Gym uniforms must be worn by 5th graders on Wednesdays for gym.

F. There will be no extended day classes for 5th grade this week, but the Afterschool Program will be in session.

G. Please check the blog daily for updated homework assignments or notifications. Make sure that you read Mr. Woods blog for other important announcements.

H. No school Thursday and Friday due to the Thanksgiving Holiday.

I. Please see Mr. Woods blog concerning Report Card Distribution and Parent-Teacher Conferences on Tuesday.

J. Tuesday is the last day to donate cans for the canned food drive. The cans of food will be donated to St. Patrick’s Nursing Facility in the Bronx. Please donate as many cans as possible!

K. There will be a 12:00 dismissal on Tuesday,11/22 due to Parent/Teacher Conferences. If your child does not receive his/her Report Card in school on Tuesday morning, you must pick it up between 1:00 PM-7:00PM and speak with the teachers. Report Cards will not be given to any student whose tuition is not up to date.

Remember that homework and classwork count as a grade!

HOMEWORK: For the Week of November 21- Module 2 Week 2

Homework for Grade 5:

The 5th Grade is reading the following books for Module 2:
a. Investigating the Scientific Method with Max Axiom, Super Scientist
b. The Boy Who invented TV: The Story of Philo Farnsworth

Please read pages 16-31 in Investigating the Scientific Method by Monday, 11/28. 

*** It is very important that your child brings his/her book every day so they can do their work in class.

Check your folder each night for papers that you might have to complete for homework.

Write all new vocabulary on index cards. The word should be written on the front of the card in large print. Module 2 should also be written on the bottom right corner on the front of the card. The definition should be written on the back of the card. All cards must be numbered and be kept in a Ziploc bag. Words will not be accepted if they are not in a bag! Please keep Module 1 index cards in a safe place, so you will have them for the Midterm Exam. You can keep them at home until we start to review.

Reading Vocabulary for the week will be listed in the Reading Vocabulary notebook. If there are no new words, then index cards do not have to be handed in on Monday.

Achieve 3000 is assigned each week to help improve the children’s vocabulary and comprehension skills. The children should complete any assignments (activities or thought questions) that are not completed during class. They can also get extra review by completing the stretch activities for the story that they have worked on in class. The Activity and Thought Question must be completed every week because they are counted as a grade!

7th Grade Social Studies-

Homework:

The English Colonies: 1605-1774

Monday- Write and review the following vocabulary in the SS Vocabulary NB. Skip a line between each definition and remember the Aim, Module 2 and the week, and the date. I will be deducting points if any of the heading is missing! Please use the textbook for the definitions, unless they are not there. Then you may use the internet or dictionary. Please make sure that the meaning relates to what we are doing in class. Due Monday, 11/28

Tuesday-Read pages 78-84 in the textbook. On page 84, answer questions 1a, 2a, 3a, 4a (you must restate the question in the answer) on looseleaf with a full heading. Due Monday, 11/28.

Vocabulary for the week:
Puritans, Pilgrims, immigrants, Mayflower Compact, Squanto, John Winthrop, Anne Hutchinson

Copy the following words and definitions into your notebook also:

1. bicameral- two houses

2. congregation-church members

3. covenant-promise

4. dissenters- people who disagree with official opinions

5. Protestant Reformation- a religious movement that began in the 1520s as an effort to reform the Catholic Church.

6. radical- extreme


Map of the Month (North America) is due on Wednesday, December 14.

Native American Projects are due on December 15.

Outline for Project:
Slide 1: Introduction- Person's name and picture, your name, date, and grade

Slide 2: Infancy (where and when he/she was born), childhood, and teenage years, parents, siblings (can be more than 1 slide)

Slide 3: Life as an adult (can be more than 1 slide)

Slide 4: What tribe did your Native American belong too? Where in America was the tribe located? Give information about the tribe and location (is more than 1 slide)

Slide 5: What part of history does your person live during. Explain your answer.

Slide 6: Bibliography- there must be more than two sources of information, meaning at least three. (video is optional)

There should be no more than two sentences of text on a slide. Your information should be on index cards. Study your presentation, so you are not reading from the cards- the cards should be used as notes, so you don't forget anything. I will be grading much harder than your first project! Please follow the outline carefully.
