WEEK OF APRIL 27, 2009 2ND GRADE

REMINDERS: 1.Remember to bring all school supplies everyday, including the homework. 2.Please check your child’s purple assignment book every night for HW and notes. 3.Please read with your child each night, not only books required for school, but books that are chosen by your child for enjoyment. 4.A new book will be distributed this week for the children to read( girls will read The Story of Jumping Mouse and boys will be reading Johnny Appleseed). Please make sure that your child reads for thirty mins. each night and takes notes on important details. Notes will be started in the back of the Reading Notebook. 5. The children will need to write a paragraph (minimum of 6 sentences) titles "Mother's Day is A Special Day" . This should be done on looseleaf and the children should also make a cover for it. This will be due on Weds. 5/6. TESTS: Spelling Test on Friday, May 8 (words are on p. 47 in spelling book) Language Arts Test on Friday, May 8 (review pp. 94- 132 in Language Handbook) VOCABULARY: From Seed to Plant beautiful, nutrition, protects, ripens, streams HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS: air, different, food, light, water SPELLING: From Seed to Plant sprout, streams, through, strong, strap, springtime, spray, throat, three, ostrich, pioneers, clearing, air, different, light READING MONDAY, APRIL 27 AIM: To complete a comprehension activity LESSON: The children will complete a comprehension activity in which they will have to find details within the context of a story. HW: complete p. 47 in Spelling Book TUESDAY: APRIL 28 AIM: To write new vocabulary in the Reading Notebook LESSON: The children will update their Reading vocabulary in the Reading NB. HW: The children will write each spelling word 5x in the Reading NB WEDNESDAY: APRIL 29 – NO class do to NYSESLAT Testing- Speaking section THURSDAY: APRIL 30 AIM: To create a Story Map for Johnny Appleseed LESSON: 1. The children will create a Story Map for the story Johnny Appleseed 2. We will review all new vocabulary and high frequency words. HW: review new vocabulary words and spelling words FRIDAY, APRIL 24 No class due to Faculty Conference Day LANGUAGE ARTS MONDAY, APRIL 27 AIM: To review all nouns LESSON: The children will review all nouns pp. 94- 117 in Language Handbook HW: write sents. 1-5 on p. 117 (Lang. Handbook) correctly in Language Arts NB. Please skip a line between each sentence, write Homework, date and page number on the top the page in the notebook. TUESDAY, APRIL 28 AIM: To review abbreviations and showing ownership LESSON: The children will review pp. 118- 123 in Language Handbook concerning abbreviations and showing ownership. HW: rewrite the letter on p. 123 in the Language Handbook correctly in the Language Arts NB. Please write Homework, the date, page number on the top of the page in the notebook. Also, skip a line between each sentence. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29 No class due to NYSESLAT Testing THURSDAY, APRIL 30 AIM: To review pronouns LESSON: The children will review pronouns and complete practice exercises in the Language Handbook (pp. 124-126). HW: Do numbers 7 -12 on p. 126 in the Language Handbook. Please follow the directions for setting up the notebook from Monday and Tuesdays’ nights HW. FRIDAY, MAY 1 No class due to Faculty Conference Day HAVE A GOOD WEEK!!!!

TESTS: Book Test on Strega Nona and The Legend of Bluebonnet Weds. 4/22 VOCABULARY: frontier, nearby, orchards, survive, tame, wild HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS: bag, call, country, rain, sleep SPELLING: NO NEW WORDS THIS WEEK READING MONDAY, APRIL 20 AIM: To work on Portfolios (update) HW: see Purple Assignment Book TUESDAY: APRIL 21 NO CLASS DUE TO HONORS ASSEMBLY HW: study for Book Test. Bring notes and book to school tomorrow. WEDNESDAY: APRIL 22 AIM: To take an Open Book Test HW: see purple assignment book THURSDAY: APRIL 23 AIM: To review r-controlled vowels /ar/, /er/, /ir/, /or/, /ur/ LESSON: 1. We will practice the r-controlled vowels by doing practice in the phonics book. 2. We will review all vocabulary and high frequency words. HW: see purple assignment book FRIDAY, APRIL 24 AIM: To talk about folktales LESSON: 1. The children will review the definition of a folktale and decide if most are considered fiction or nonfiction. 2. To reread the story and look for examples of fictional instances LANGUAGE ARTS MONDAY, APRIL 20 AIM: To continue to work on Portfolios HW: see purple assignment book TUESDAY, APRIL 21 NO CLASS DUE TO PARENT CONFERENCES WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22 NO CLASS DUE TO FACULTY MEETING THURSDAY, APRIL 23 AIM: To review showing ownership (POSSESSIVE NOUNS AND PRONOUNS) LESSON: The children will review the meaning of a possessive noun and complete practice exercises in the Language Handbook HW: see purple assignment book FRIDAY, APRIL 24 AIM: To review pronouns LESSON: The children will review the meaning of a pronoun and do practice exercises in the Language Handbook.
