WEEK OF MARCH 2, 2009 2ND GRADE

REMINDERS: 1. Remember to bring all school supplies everyday, including the homework. 2. Please check your child’s purple assignment book every night for HW and notes. 3. A new book was handed out on Thursday, 3/5 for the children to read. Please read with your child each night, not only books required for school, but books that are chosen by your child for enjoyment. There will be a open book test for this book on Tues. 3/17. Girls are reading Strega Nona and boys are reading The Legend of the Blue Bonnet. TESTS: Spelling Test Tuesday, 3/3 Words are on p.36 in the Spelling Book. Book Test on Anansi the Spider or Stone Soup Tuesday, 3/3 Vocabulary Tuesday, 3/10 on the words from The Enormous Turnip, Helping Out, Mr. Putter and Tabby Fly the Plane, Hedgehog Bakes a Cake, and Lemonade for Sale. The words are defined in the children’s Reading Notebook VOCABULARY: Lemonade for Sale announced, arrived, glum, members, rebuild HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS: between, enough, fill, idea, number SPELLING: bar, jar, star, farm, harm, charm, dark, remark, sparkle, alarm, fourteen, source, between, enough, idea READING: TUESDAY: MARCH 3 AIM: To complete the Book Test on Anansi or Stone Soup. LESSON: 1.The children will take an open book test on Anansi the Spider (boys) and Stone Soup (girls) HW: Spelling Book p. 39, 40, 41, 42, 43 WEDNESDAY: MARCH 4 AIM: To decode regular multisyllable words LESSON: 1. The children will do a listening comprehension activity. 2. The children will review the sound of /ar/, /arm/, and /ark/ when reading and spelling. 3. The children will write the new vocabulary in their notebooks. HW: Phonics p. 133, 134 THURSDAY: MARCH 5 AIM: To understand what synonyms are; to understand how using one synonym in place of another can change the meaning of a sentence. LESSON: 1. Review the vocabulary 2. Review the meaning of synonyms and try to replace easier synonyms with more difficult ones- such as pretty can be replaced with attractive, 3. We will discuss background of the story and making inferences about information we can get from a story without the author directly stating it. 4. The class will read the story together. HW: Phonics pp. 135, 136 FRIDAY: MARCH 6 AIM: To be able to sequence events in the proper order (comprehension) LESSON: 1. We will try to put the events of The Little Red Hen in proper order 2. Spelling Words will be reviewed for test tomorrow 3. Vocabulary Words will be reviewed and discussed. 4. The children will review syllabication rules when decoding words HW: Review for Vocabulary Test and read for at least 30 minutes each day. LANGUAGE ARTS TUESDAY, MARCH 3 AIM: to write the names of days, months and holidays LESSON: 1. The children will write the names of the days and months correctly (pp. 109- 113). HW: check purple assignment book WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4 AIM: To review the names of holidays LESSON: The children will write the names of holidays correctly in Language Arts Handbook (pp. 115-117) HW: check purple assignment book THURSDAY, MARCH 5 AIM: To review abbreviations LESSON: The children will review the meaning of an abbreviation and complete practice exercises on pp. 118- 120 in the Language Handbook HW: check purple assignment book FRIDAY, MARCH 6 AIM: To review abbrev1ations LESSON: The children will review the meaning of a possessive noun and complete practice exercises in the Language Handbook HW: REVIEW THIS WEEK'S WORK HAVE A GOOD WEEK!!!!

A listening activity will be completed 2. The comprehension skill of drawing conclusions will be discussed 3. The new vocabulary will be introduced and written in the Reading NB. 4. Background information for the story will be discussed HW: see purple assignment book TUESDAY: FEB. 2/24 AIM: to discuss newspaper projects . LESSON: The children will work on their newspaper project with their partners. HW: See assignment books WEDNESDAY: FEB. 2/25 NO class due to Mass THURSDAY: FEB.2/26 AIM: To review drawing conclusions and cause/effect LESSON: 1. The children will answer the Question of the Day 2. Activites reinforcing drawing conclusions and cause /effect relationships will be reviewed. Practice Book pp.56,57, 66, and 69 will be completed in class. 3. Vocabulary Words will be written in class notebook. . Who is in your group? What topics are you going to write about? TUESDAY, FEB.24 AIM:To work on newspaper article. LESSON: The children will work with their partners on their newspaper projects HW: check purple assignment book WEDNESDAY, FEB.25 AIM: To learn to write a how-to essay (expository writing) LESSON: The children will write the format for a How-to Essay HW: check purple assignment book THURSDAY, FEB. 26 AIM: To work on class newspaper; to review singular, plural, possessive nouns. LESSON: 1. The children will work on the class newspaper. 2. We will review errors made on the Lang. Arts Test on Nouns.
