WEEK OF MAY 11, 2009 2ND GRADE

REMINDERS: 1. Remember to bring all school supplies everyday, including the homework. 2. Please check your child’s purple assignment book every night for HW and notes. 3. Please read with your child each night, not only books required for school, but books that are chosen by your child for enjoyment. 4. A new book was distributed for the children to read (girls will read The Story of Jumping Mouse and boys will be reading Johnny Appleseed). Please make sure that your child reads for thirty mins. each night and takes notes on important details. Notes will be started in the back of the Reading Notebook. Book Test will be on Friday, May 15. TESTS: Language Arts Test on Friday, 5/15 (review pp. 94- 132 in Language Handbook) VOCABULARY: The Secret Life of Trees discover, energy, forecast, shed, source HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS: answer, bark, page, paper, tall SPELLING: The Secret Life of Trees smooth, roots, food, scooter, boot, broom, moon, cartoon, roof, spoon, springtime, ostrich, answer, paper, page READING MONDAY, MAY 11 AIM: To start new story- The Secret Life of Trees LESSON: 1. Shared Literature- The children will listen to a story and be able to answer questions pertaining to that story. 2. Phonics- the vowel digraph /oo/ will be introduced 3. The new spelling words will be reviewed HW: read book and complete classwork TUESDAY: MAY 12 AIM: To read and discuss a story LESSON: 1. Shared Literature- the children will listen to and discuss a poem. 2. Phonics: The vowel digraph /oo/ will be reviewed. 3. Spelling words will be reviewed 4. The new vocabulary words will be introduced HW: see assignment book WEDNESDAY: MAY 13 AIM: To discuss fact and fiction LESSON: 1. Shared Literature- the children will listen to the story of City Green. 2. Spelling and Vocabulary Words will be reviewed 3. The children will make a sequence chart to order the events in the Story From Seed to Plant. 4. The difference between fact and fiction will be reviewed HW: copy over the Sequence Chart in the Reading NB onto looseleaf. THURSDAY: MAY 14 AIM: To decode words by breaking them into smaller segments LESSON: 1. Spelling and vocabulary words will be reviewed. 2. The syllable pattern C-le will be introduced 3. The children will see that breaking words up into syllables can help to decode longer and more difficult words. HW: Practice book pp. 93, 94, 95 FRIDAY, MAY 15 AIM: To take a book test LESSON: The children will take an open book test HW: review this week’s work LANGUAGE ARTS MONDAY, MAY 11 AIM: To review nouns LESSON: The children will review all nouns pp. 94- 117 in Language Handbook HW: see assignment book TUESDAY, MAY 12 AIM: To review material for test ( Pronouns p. 124 1-10) LESSON: The children will review for the Language Arts Test HW: p. 125 1-10 Language Handbook . HW: see assignment book THURSDAY, MAY 14 AIM: To complete a sequence chart LESSON: The children will create a sequence chart of the events in a story they have read. HW: see assignment book FRIDAY, MAY 15 AIM: To complete a Language Arts Test LESSON: The children will complete a comprehension activity on a story that they have read. HAVE A GOOD WEEK!!!!
