WEEK OF MAY 25, 2009 3RD GRADE

REMINDERS: 1. Remember to bring all school supplies everyday, including the homework. 2. Please check your child’s purple assignment book every night for HW and notes. 3. We are in great need of tissue for the classroom. Please send in a box. 4. Friday, 5/29 we will have out May Procession at 10:00. Every child should have a pair of Rosary Beads. The children who made Holy Communion are asked to wear their Communion clothes to school that day since they will lead the Procession. They may bring clothes to change into when the ceremony is over. Please send in a bag so your child will have a place to put their Communion clothes when he/she changes. There will be a 2:30 dismissal. 5. Final Exams will begin next week. Mr. Woods will post the schedule of exams on the blog and also on the board in the lunchroom. A review for each subject will be posted on the blog, so that you can help your child to review for each exam. Please make sure that you have access to a computer so that you can see the schedule and the reviews. If not see Mr. Marcial to use one of the school’s computers. READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS- REVIEW SHEET The blog for this week in Reading and Language Arts will be the Review for the Final Exams. We will take be reviewing all the vocabulary words, phonic skills, spelling words and grammar in class. The children should do the same at home. I will be giving CW and HW during the week to help the children practice the skills. Please check the Assignment Book or blog each day to check for any changes or homework assignments. If you have a question about anything on the blog, please send me a note or see me. HAVE A GOOD WEEK!!!!! REVIEW FOR READING 3RD GRADE: READING EXAM 1. Vocabulary Words: know the meaning of the vocabulary words from the following stories: A. . Turtle Bay B. Balto, the Dog Who Saved Nome C. Wild Shots, They’re My Life D. Little Grunt and the Big Egg E. Rosie: A Visiting Dog’s Story F. The Stories Julian Tells G. The Talent Show H. Centerfield Ballhawk I. Ramona Forever J. Sayings We Share: Proverbs and Fables The definition of each word can be found in your child's Reading Notebook listed under the name of each story. If your child was absent for any of the words, you can check the Reading Text Book for the words and the definitions are in the glossary. Review pages 20 -71 in the Reading Practice Book. Spelling: The children should know the Spelling Words for the stories above. The spelling words can be found in the notebook and also the spelling book pp. 27- 55 Other skills that should be reviewed and are reviewed in the Reading Notebook are: 1. Synonyms- words that mean nearly the same eg. big, large 2. Antonyms- words that are opposites eg. hot, cold 3. Homophones- words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and have different meanings eg. I, eye 4. Multiple Meaning Words- words that are spelled the same, sound the same, but have different meanings eg. trunk- An elephant has a trunk. I put the groceries in the trunk of the car. 5. Syllabication- the number of vowel sounds that you hear in a word eg. rainbow has 2 syllables because the long a sound is heard in the first syllable and the long o sound is heard in the second syllable. 6. Root Words- the base word eg. walked the root word is “walk”. The word without any prefixes or endings. 7. Prefixes- letters that are added to the beginning of a word and change its meaning eg. redo- re is a prefix that means to “do over again” 8. Suffixes- letters that are added to the end of a word and change its meaning eg. wishful- ful is a suffix that means “full of” 9. Compound Words- two complete words that are put together to make a new word eg. rain + bow = rainbow 10. Contractions- two words are combined by using an apostrophe to make a word shorter eg.
