Week of April 27, 2015

Reminders:
These are a few reminders concerning homework and classwork:

A. If the assignment states that looseleaf is to be used, no other types of paper will be accepted (paper ripped out of notebooks or legal pads is unacceptable).   

B. All work must be completed in blue or black ink (other colors will not be accepted).  

C. Homework and classwork must be neat. Work that is sloppy or illegible will not be accepted.

D. Homework must be handed in on the day due, unless I receive a not from a parent explaining why you did not complete your HW. This will only be accepted if there is an emergency at home (not because you were too tired or that you had too much other HW). 

E. Gym uniforms must be worn on Thursdays for gym.

F. School Evaluation on Thursday.

G. Summer Uniform can be worn starting Friday, May 1.

Aim: to identify the meaning of unfamiliar words found in Unit 5

1. abolition (n) the act of putting an end to something by law, such as the abolition of slavery
2. pavement (n) a floor-like structure stone or tile structure of roads, sidewalks, or walkways
3. pasture (n) an area covered with grass or other plants used or suitable for the grazing of livestock (cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, etc)

4. conductor (n) one who conducts, especially one who is in charge of a railroad train, bus, or streetcar
5. spoiled (adj) to harm the character of a child by overindulging him with many gifts or money, and letting him do whatever he wants; pamper; coddle
6. collapsed (v) to fall or cave in; to crumble suddenly; to break down suddenly in strength or health causing a stop in functioning
7. paddle (v) to row a boat or canoe slowly and gently using an oar or paddle  

8. caulk (v) the process and material to seal joints or seams in various structures and some types of piping. The oldest form of caulking is used to make the seams in wooden boats or ships watertight, by driving fibrous materials into the wedge-shaped seams between boards.

1. war bond- an interest bearing loan sold to support a war

2. minimum wage-the lowest hourly pay allowed by law

3. strategy-a plan for fighting a battle or war

4. epidemic- an outbreak of disease affecting many people at once

5. ratify- formally approve

6. incentive- something that encourages people to behave in a certain way

7. Model T- Henry Ford’s automobile designed with the average American in mind

8. moving assembly line- an innovation of Henry Ford’s that dramatically reduced the cost of production

9. Teapot Dome scandal- a scandal under the Harding administration  in which government officials were accused of taking bribes to allow oil to be mined from federal lands

10.Warren G. Harding- Senator from Ohio that was chosen by the Republican Party to run in the 1920 presidential election. He won and promised a return to peace and prosperity

11.Calvin Coolidge- Governor of Massachusetts that was Warren G. Harding’s running mate. He became president when Harding died of a heart attack. He supported a pro-business agenda.

12.Herbert Hoover- was elected president in 1928 and promised to maintain economic prosperity
