Week of May 4, 2015

Reminders:

These are a few reminders concerning homework and classwork:

A. If the assignment states that looseleaf is to be used, no other types of paper will be accepted (paper ripped out of notebooks or legal pads is unacceptable).   

B. All work must be completed in blue or black ink (other colors will not be accepted).  

C. Homework and classwork must be neat. Work that is sloppy or illegible will not be accepted.

D. Homework must be handed in on the day due, unless I receive a not from a parent explaining why you did not complete your HW. This will only be accepted if there is an emergency at home (not because you were too tired or that you had too much other HW). 

E. Gym uniforms must be worn on Thursdays for gym.

F. Lip Sync Contest Tuesday, 5/5 at 5:00 PM.

G. Happy Mother’s Day to all!

1. wages (n) regular payments, usually on an hourly, daily, or weekly basis, made by an employer to an employee, especially for manual or unskilled work.
2. tailored (v) to make or fashion as the work of a tailor; custom-made
3. dazzle (v) to shine brilliantly
4. monument (n) something erected (built) in memory of a person, event, etc., as a building, pillar, or statue eg. the Washington Monument
5. casket (n) a fancy coffin in which someone is buried
6. Civil Rights Movement (n) encompasses social movements in the United States whose goals were to end racial segregation
7. Civil War (n) a four year war between the US and 11 Southern states that seceded from the Union (1861-1865) and formed the Confederate States of America.
                
8. enlist (v) to sign up for service in one of the areas of the Armed Forces

ˌ9.Emancipation Proclamation (n) a proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863 that changed the legal status by 3 million slaves in the designated areas in the South from “slave” to “free”

Unit 5 Project: Choose a country and discuss its culture and celebrations. The presentation is a PowerPoint with a minimum of 10 slides- which includes the Title Page and Bibliography. If you are doing the project on the Mexican Civil War or a Native American, please see me first. Due Weds. 5/27.

1. ascertained-found out

2. assembly- holding meetings or demonstrating

6. warrants- written orders authorizing a person to make an arrest, a seizure, or a search

7. James Madison- a Federalist that wrote the first 10 amendments to the Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights

8. majority rule- the idea that policies are decided by the greatest number of people

9. petition- to make a formal request of the government

10. search warrant- a judge’s order authorizing the search of a person’s home or property to look for evidence of a crime

11. due process- the fair application of the law

12. indict- to formally accuse

13. double jeopardy- the act of trying a person twice for the same crime

14. eminent domain- the government’s power to take personal property to benefit the public

Roaring Twenties
Aim: To write and review the vocabulary for May 4, 2015

1. flappers- young women who challenged traditional ideas of womanhood in the 1920s
2. Red Scare- a widespread fear of communism and Communists
3. Twenty-first Amendment (1933) - an amendment to the constitution that ended Prohibition
4. fundamentalism- a religious belief characterized by a literal interpretation of the Bible
5. Scopes trial- a trial in which John Scopes was accused of teaching evolution illegally
6. Great Migration- a period of African American movement from the South to cities in the North
7. Marcus Garvey- an African American male that encouraged black people around the world to express pride in their culture.
8. traditional- customary; time-honored
9. talkie- a film that includes sound
10. Harlem Renaissance- a period of artistic achievement during the 1920s
11. Langston Hughes- a writer during the Harlem Renaissance that produced poems, plays, and novels about African American life. His works often incorporated African American slang and jazz rhythms.
12. Lost Generation- the generation of young people who fought in World War I and eventually became disillusioned with the promise of American society
13. expatriates- citizens who leave their country to live elsewhere
14. Georgia O’Keefe- was a painter during the Harlem Renaissance who was well-known for her detailed paintings of flowers and of the Southwest
15. innovation- a new way of doing things
