Reminders:
These are a few reminders
concerning homework and classwork:
A. If the assignment
states that looseleaf is to be used, no other types of paper will be
accepted (paper ripped out of notebooks or legal pads is unacceptable).
B. All work must be completed in blue or black ink (other colors
will not be accepted).
C. Homework and classwork must be neat. Work that is sloppy or
illegible will not be accepted.
D. Homework must be handed in on the day due, unless I receive a
not from a parent explaining why you did not complete your HW. This will
only be accepted if there is an emergency at home (not because you
were too tired or that you had too much other HW).
E. Gym uniforms must be worn on Thursdays for gym.
F. District Science Fair at OLQM on Wednesday, 5/13 at 4:00.
G. There is information about the books for Unit 6 below where
homework is located.
Remember that homework and classwork count as a grade!

which includes the Title Page and Bibliography. If you are doing the project on
the Mexican Civil War or a Native American, please see me first. Due

Aim: To
write and review the vocabulary for the Week of May 11, 2015
1. agreement- a decision
reached by two or more groups
2. George Washington- he was
a hero in the American Revolution and the first President of the US.
3. electoral college- a
group of people selected from each of the states to cast votes in presidential
elections
4. Martha Washington- wife
of George Washington
5. precedent- an action of
decision that later serves as an example
6. Judiciary Act of 1789-
legislation passed by Congress that created the federal court system
7. mint- a place to make
coins
8. monopoly- sole or
exclusive control
9. tariff- an extra charge
on goods
10.Alexander Hamilton-
served as George Washington’s aide, delegate to four Continental Congresses,
and became secretary of the treasury. He developed a three-point plan to solve
the nation’s financial problems. He was a Federalist. He believed in a strong
central government that balanced power between the “mass of the people” and
wealthier citizens. That ensured that the people would not have too much power.
11. national debt- the total
amount of money owned by a country to its lenders
12. bond- a certificate that
represents money the government has borrowed from private citizens
13. speculators- investors
who buy items at lower prices in hope that their values will rise
14. loose construction- a
way of interpreting the Constitution that allows the federal government to take
actions that the Constitution does not specifically forbid it from taking
15. strict construction- a
way of interpreting the Constitution that allows the federal government to take
only those actions the Constitution specifically says it can take
16. Bank of the United States-
a national bank chartered by Congress in 1791 to provide security for the US
economy
17. Thomas Jefferson- the
main author of the Declaration of Independence who was an antifederalist who
wanted to protect the states. He felt that it was the right of the people to
rule the country. He disagreed with Alexander Hamilton on many issues.

Great Depression
Aim: To
write and review the vocabulary for May 11, 2015
1. buying on margin- the process of purchasing
stock with credit, hoping to sell at a high enough price to pay a loan and make
a profit
2. Black Tuesday- October 29, 1929- one of the
largest stock market drops
3. business cycle- the rhythm in which an economy
expands and contracts its production the rhythm in which an economy expands and
contracts its production
4. Great Depression- a severe economic crisis
that lasted for the entire decade of the 1930s
5. Bonus Army-a group of WWI veterans that
demanded their bonus payments early
6. Franklin D. Roosevelt- Governor of New York.
He ran against Herbert Hoover in the 1932 Presidential election and won,
because the voters liked his confidence and optimistic personality. He began the
New Deal and was elected president three times.
7. New Deal- FDR’s legislative plan to end the
Great Depression that included dramatic reforms of government agencies and
powers
8. fireside chats- radio programs in which FDR
explained his plan for recovery from the Great Depression
9. Social Security Act- (1935) a law that
instituted the pension plan Social Security
10. sit-down strike- a strike in which workers
stay at their work stations so that strikebreakers cannot replace them
11. Frances Perkins- the secretary of labor, the
first woman cabinet member
12. Eleanor Roosevelt- was the wife of FDR who was
an active supporter of New Deal Programs
13. Tennessee Valley Authority- (TVA) a
governmental agency designed to bring jobs and electricity to rural areas in
the Tennessee River Valley
14. Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) a
union that organized workers according to industry, not by skill
