WEEK OF FEB. 9- 13,2009 3RD GRADE
REMINDERS:
1. Book Fair all next week. See flyer for selection of books and prices.
2. Individual Picture Day, Tues. 2/10. Drop off the money in the envelope to Mrs. Resto. The children may wear uniform or whatever you like for the pictures. Children not taking pictures should wear their gym uniform.
3. Test papers will be distributed by Mr. Woods on Weds. 2/11. Please sign all tests and return on Weds. or Thurs.
4. RED DAY- Friday, 2/13 the children may wear red clothing to school in honor of Valentine's Day. The children may also bring snacks to school on that day (just for themselves). Dismissal at 2:30.
5. Monday, 2/16 no school in honor of President's Day. The ASP will be open.
TESTS:
Book Test on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Ramona and Her Father will be on Friday 2/27. The children should be halfway through the books and making notes as they read.
Spelling Test will be tomorrow, Mon. 2/9

READING:
Mon. 2/9/09
Aim: to classify word relationships (synonyms, antonyms, homophones) and to understand that
recognizing and blending together letter sounds in a word help us to identify unfamiliar or more difficult words.
Lesson: The children will review the meanings of synonym, antonym, and homophone and try to group words in to the correct category.
The children will work on decoding unfamiliar words using spelling patterns.
Making predictions will be introduced as a new comprehension strategy.

Tues. 2/10/09
Aim: to read words to which the ending -ed has been added and to determine
author's purpose for writing a selection.
Lesson: The children will work on adding the ending /ed/ to root words to show that the action has happened in the past. Sometimes the spelling will change when adding the ending /ed/. These rules will be copied into the Reading NB.
Author's Purpose will be discussed . Authors will sometimes have more than one purpose for writing a story or article.

Weds. 2/11/09
Aim: to use knowledge of word relationships in order to understand analogies.
Lesson: The children will write the definition of analogies in their Reading NB. The class will then do some practice exercises on how words relate to each other.
HW: see purple book.
Thurs. 2/12/09
Aim: to summarize an author's purpose and to use headings, captions, and other text features to predict content and monitor comprehension.
Lesson: The children will recall and discuss the 4 different purposes or reasons that authors write articles or stories. They will also look at how author's of nonfiction sometimes include headings, captions , and photos to help readers understand important ideas.

Friday 2/13/09
Aim: to review new vocabulary words for Wild Shots, They're My Life and discuss background for the story.
Lesson: The children will write the new vocabulary in their Reading NB. Then we will discuss background information for the story.
HW: continue to read Ramona or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Monday, 2/9/09
Aim: to write an effective paragraph
Lesson: the class will write an effective paragraph together in the Lang. Arts NB
HW: write a paragraph about Valentine's Day start with a topic sentence. Do in Lang. Arts NB
Tues., 2/10/09
Aim: to edit draft of Valentine's paragraph
Lesson: the children will redo their paragraphs after being edited.
HW: Lang. Arts Book pg. 108 1-8. Rewrite the paragraph in the Lang. Arts NB added the correct word for each number. Underline each correct word in the paragraph.
Weds., 2/11/09
Aim: to introduce plural possessive nouns
Lesson: The children will write the meaning of a plural possessive noun in their Lang. Arts NB. They will then complete some exercises practicing this skill.
HW: Lang. Arts Book pg. 109 6-12. Write the sentences and add the possessive form of the plural noun in parentheses (). Do in LA NB.
Thurs., 2/12/09
Aim: to review plural possessive nouns
Lesson: The children will complete more practice exercises with this concept.
HW: Write each spelling word on pg. 33 in spelling book 5x each (do in Reading NB)
