WEEK OF MARCH 2, 2009 3RD GRADE

REMINDERS: 1.Remember to bring all school supplies everyday, including the homework. 2. Please check your child’s purple assignment book every night for HW and notes. 3. March calendars will go home today. Please read carefully. 4. Our class will be doing a spring show. The date is Monday, 3/30 at 5:00 PM. If you would like your child to participate in the show, please write yes and sign your name next to the note in the purple assignment book under reminders. As soon as I find out about costumes, I will let you know. If you do not want your child to participate, please write no and sign your name. 5. Please bring in a box of Kleenex if you haven’t already done so. 6. The children received their new books last Friday. There will be a book test in 3 weeks on Weds. 3/25. They should read 30 minutes each day (7 days a week) in order to finish the book on time. Some children only start a week before the book is due and it is difficult to complete because of all the other HW. Notes on the book should be kept in the Reading Notebook. Notes will be started in class tomorrow in the back of the notebook. TESTS: 1. Vocabulary Test Monday, 3/9 on the words from Turtle Bay, Balto, the Dog Who Saved Nome, Wild Shots, They’re My Life, Little Grunt and the Big Egg, and Rosie, a Visiting Dog’s Story. All words are defined in the Reading Notebook. 2.Spelling Test, Friday 3/6. Words are on p.36 (also below) VOCABULARY: Rosie, a Visiting Dog’s Story firm, confident, comfortable, approach, equipment, program, appointment SPELLING: Little Grunt (test Fri. 3/6) joyful, choice, voice, joint, moist, spoil, royal, annoy, noise, employ, soil, loyal, boiled, destroy, pointy CHALLENGE WORDS: earthquake, volcano, hurricane, weather, rumble SPELLING WORDS FOR ROSIE, A VISITING…. The class will reread Little Grunt for fluency. 2. Vocabulary words will be reviewed for the last 4 stories. 3. Open and closed syllables will be reviewed. HW: Spelling- Write a sentence for spelling words 1-10 from Little Grunt. Underline the spelling word in each sentence. WEDNESDAY: MARCH 4 AIM: To review multiple meaning words to aid in comprehension accuracy LESSON: 1.The children will do a listening comprehension activity. 2. The class will answer and discuss the Question of the Day 3. We will review multiple meaning words. 4. The children will make a reality/fantasy chart for their portfolios 5. The class will review and write new vocabulary in their Reading NBs for Rosie, a Visiting Dog’s Story. HW: Spelling- write a sentence for spelling words 11-20 in the Reading NB (words from Little Grunt). THURSDAY: MARCH 5 AIM: To review spelling and vocabulary words from Little Grunt and the Big Egg LESSON: 1. The children will review spelling words. 2. We will write a sample of a how- to chart in the LA NB 3. The vocabulary will be reviewed for Rosie, a Visiting…. HW: Think of something that you can teach someone how to do or of something you can make. Make a how-to chart on looseleaf following each step that is in your LA NB, but using your own idea. This will be due on Tuesday, 3/10 FRIDAY: MARCH 6 AIM: to take a spelling test LESSON: 1. Review Vocabulary for test on Monday. 2. Review Spelling Words for Rosie, a Visiting…. And discuss the sound of /ou/ and /ow/ as in loud and howl. HW: read for at least 30 minutes and study vocabulary words for test Monday. LANGUAGE ARTS TUESDAY, MARCH 3 AIM: to review singular and plural pronouns LESSON: The class will discuss pronouns and write examples in the Language Arts NB (pp. 115) HW: see purple assignment book WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4 AIM: To review singular and plural pronouns LESSON: The children will complete some practice exercises on pp. in Lang. Arts book dealing with pronouns and abbreviations. HW: see purple assignment book THURSDAY, MARCH 5, No LA class due to computer class FRIDAY, MARCH 6 AIM: To review singular and plural pronouns. LESSON: The children will learn about subject pronouns HW: REVIEW THIS WEEK'S WORK HAVE A GOOD WEEK!!!!
