WEEK OF MARCH 23- 27, 2009 2ND GRADE

REMINDERS: 1.Remember to bring all school supplies everyday, including the homework. 2.Please check your child’s purple assignment book every night for HW and notes. 3.Please read with your child each night, not only books required for school, but books that are chosen by your child for enjoyment. 4.Please sign and return all tests handed out by Mr. Woods on Tues. 3/24. TESTS: Spelling Test Friday, 3/27. Words are on p.44 in the Spelling Book Book Test on Strega Nona and The Legend of Bluebonnet Tues. 3/24 VOCABULARY: Johnny Appleseed frontier, nearby, orchards, survive, tame, wild HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS: bag, call, country, rain, sleep SPELLING: pioneers, cheers, clearing, hear, nearby, year, beard, reindeer, steer, peer, remark, alarm, sleep, country, rain READING: MONDAY: MARCH 23 No class due to practice for the Spring Show. TUESDAY: March 24 AIM: To introduce the new theme and discuss the new story Johnny Appleseed LESSON: 1.The children will listen to the short story “Tops and Bottoms” and answer questions about the story (listening comprehension). 2. The children will be introduced to the r-controlled vowels in /ir/ ear, eer (phonics). 3. The children will review the new spelling words on p. 44 in the spelling book. HW: Write spelling words 5x each in Reading Notebook WEDNESDAY: MARCH 25 AIM: To review the focus skill for this story- details. LESSON: 1. The children will do a listening comprehension activity 2. The children will review the sound of ear, eer 3. The children will be introduced to the new vocabulary for this story and write it in the Reading NB HW: Spelling- write a sentence for words 1-8 on p. 44 in the Reading NB. Underline each spelling word. THURSDAY: MARCH 26 AIM: To review r-controlled vowels /ar/, /er/, /ir/, /or/, /ur/ LESSON: 1. We will practice the r-controlled vowels by doing practice in the phonics book. 2. We will review the sentences for HW and all spelling words 3. We will review all vocabulary and high frequency words. HW: Spelling - write a sentence for words 9-15 on p.44 in Reading NB. Underline each spelling word. Study for spelling test. FRIDAY, MARCH 27 AIM: To take a spelling test on the words from Lesson 1- Theme 3 p. 44 LESSON: 1. The children will take a spelling test 2. We will reread the story of Johnny Appleseed for fluency 3. We will review vocabulary words and high frequency words HW: read new book given out on Wednesday LANGUAGE ARTS MONDAY, MARCH 23 No class due to 11:30 dismissal TUESDAY, MARCH 24 AIM: To do a book test on Strega Nona or The Legend of the Bluebonnet LESSON: The children will complete and open book test on one of the above books. HW: check purple assignment book WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25 AIM: To review pronouns LESSON: The children will review the meaning of a pronoun and do practice exercises in the Language Handbook. HW: check purple assignment book THURSDAY, MARCH 26 AIM: To review showing ownership LESSON: The children will review the meaning of a possessive noun and complete practice exercises in the Language Handbook FRIDAY, MARCH 27- NO CLASS DUE TO PRACTICE FOR THE SPRING SHOW.
